What are tattoos?

by KitainkPH

Tattoos are more than ink on skin, they are a form of expression, identity, and memory. For many, tattoos mark personal milestones, honor loved ones, or simply serve as art that one chooses to carry. For others, they are statements of culture, belief, or survival.

There are many types of tattoos, each serving different purposes:

  • Makeup Tattoos
Also called cosmetic tattoos, these enhance or replace makeup, such as eyebrow microblading, lip blush, or eyeliner tattoos. They offer long-lasting definition and are often chosen for convenience or confidence.

  • Minimal Tattoos
Clean, small, and simple, minimal tattoos are popular for their subtlety. They often carry deep personal meaning despite their size, like a single word, symbol, or delicate linework.

  • Traditional Tattoos
Rooted in culture and heritage, traditional tattoos connect individuals to their ancestry, rituals, and community. In the Philippines, traditional tattoos (like batok) are rich in history, symbolism, and identity.

  • Cover-Up Tattoos
These are designed to conceal unwanted or old tattoos. They can also be used to reclaim one’s body—turning past experiences or scars into something new and empowering.

Tattoos are personal and public at the same time. They reflect stories, identities, and decisions. No two are exactly alike, and every tattoo has a reason behind it.
